Architectural LED lighting
LED lighting uses less energy to produce the same light quality as traditional fixtures. The colour temperature can also be adjusted and fixtures can be dimmed. Rather than emitting light and heat in all directions, LEDs emit light in a specified direction.
These factors give architects creative licence to install lighting schemes that subtly highlight architectural features artistically, without revealing the fixtures themselves.
Architectural LED lighting has facilitated innovation in lighting technology. LED lightbulbs and fixtures are the most widely used option for smart lighting devices and technologies. Suspended lighting is often preferred over luminaires fixed into the ceiling because it can be adjusted to illuminate specific surfaces and task areas.
Ceiling downlights are ideal for task lighting and ambient lighting when connected to smart control technology. Linear LED lighting in ceilings, configured in different shapes or as pendants, can be used for statement lighting that delivers the wow factor but is still functional.
Architectural lighting project
One of Detail Lighting’s most prominent architectural lighting projects is the Pennington Street Dock Rum Factory in London. Our brief was to re-engineer the existing lighting to deliver architectural lighting that was more appropriate for the purpose and layout of the space.
Pendant lights were hung to illuminate the large, open hall and staircase. We designed custom-made Volans LEDline IP68 strips for the balustrade edges of the staircase treads. Uplights were recessed into the flooring to provide directional lighting to the walls. DALI controlled Mira, high power LED spotlights illuminated the architectural beams and posts with subtle, narrow shafts of light.
The overall architectural lighting design complemented and highlighted the historic features and textures of the building interior.
