- Ambient/general lighting – sets the tone and is usually provided by overhead fixtures such as recessed spotlights, track lights, ceiling lamps and chandeliers. Floor and table lamps also provide ambient lighting.
- Accent lighting – draws attention to features such as artwork or plants or decorative architectural design elements. Wall mounted fixtures, tracks, picture lights and recessed lighting all provide accent lighting.
- Task lighting – localised lighting to facilitate the completion of tasks. Examples are lamps, recessed or track lighting, and linear LED lighting particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.

Bespoke lighting design projects
Detail Lighting work on both residential and commercial bespoke lighting design projects.
Southbank Place (residential)
For this residential project we specified lighting for 97 apartments, communal areas and a premium health club and spa. All spaces were very different, each requiring its own bespoke specification.
Kia showroom (commercial)
For Kia’s showroom, we were asked to develop energy efficient lighting design concepts that would highlight the features and aesthetics of their cars while also creating a warm welcome for Kia customers.
Beech House (residential)
Featured on TV’s Grand Designs, the Beech House project was a residential project for a property with a small open plan layout that can prove challenging for lighting design, that looked out onto protected woodland. The owner was a chef, so lighting was required for a high specification kitchen while avoiding light pollution that could affect the wildlife.
