Lighting schemes that balance aesthetics, functionality, and energy efficiency

Understanding the nuances of lighting design is crucial to creating a showroom environment that not only showcases vehicles in their best light, but also enhances the overall customer experience.

Whether you are an architect or interior designer working on a showroom project, or you manage a showroom yourself, our lighting experts here at Detail Lighting can help you create an exciting showroom experience for your customers.

Lighting objectives

Designing an effective lighting scheme for car showrooms requires a carefully considered approach that balances aesthetics, functionality, and energy efficiency.

The primary focus for lighting schemes is to highlight the vehicles effectively, making them the stars of the showroom.

This requires a strategic approach that illuminates cars’ body lines, interiors and finishes, ensuring they look their best from every angle.

The aesthetic and branding considerations in car showroom lighting are crucial for creating a cohesive and inviting environment that reflects the brand’s identity. The choice of lighting fixtures should align with the overall design and style of the showroom, ensuring a consistent visual appeal.

Technical lighting factors

Creating an effective lighting scheme for a car showroom involves using a combination of ambient, accent, task, and decorative lighting to create a visually appealing and dynamic space.

Ambient lighting (ceiling lights, downlights, or recessed lighting) provides general illumination, setting the overall brightness.

Accent lighting focuses on showcasing specific features of the cars, and comes in the form of track lighting or spot lights. It also helps to add depth and visual interest in certain zonal areas.

Task lighting is essential for functional areas such as customer service desks, and decorative lighting adds aesthetic appeal, reinforcing the brand’s identity.

Combining all of the above elements involves light layering. The key is to design layers of light that can be blended and adjusted, producing a dynamic showroom space where the lighting adapts to the people inside.

Maximise lighting controls

Advanced lighting controls, including dimming systems, zoning, and smart controls, allow for precise adjustments, ensuring the showroom can adapt to various needs and events.

Automated systems can adjust lighting based on natural light levels, occupancy, and preset schedules, ensuring optimal illumination at all times while reducing energy consumption.

This level of control allows showroom managers to tailor the lighting environment precisely to their needs, ensuring that the showroom always looks its best and operates efficiently.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is a key consideration in the lighting design for car showrooms, offering both environmental benefits and cost savings.

Integrating LED lighting is highly recommended due to its superior energy efficiency, long lifespan, and versatile range of colour temperatures.

Incorporating daylight sensors can optimise the use of natural light, automatically adjusting artificial lighting levels based on the amount of daylight available. This not only saves energy but also creates a more dynamic and natural lighting environment.

Here at Detail Lighting we adopt a ‘Repair why Replace’ policy, where we look to refurbish lighting rather than simply replacing where possible. For more information, click here.

Lighting scheme designed for Kia Showroom

A range of our architectural lighting fixtures were used to create a dynamic showroom environment for Kia.

Our lighting experts created designs that embodied the new Kia brand identity.

The Volans Aston IP67 LED strip lighting was specified along the ceiling and down the walls, to provide ambient lighting.

The Quadro Deep Twin was used as a spotlight feature throughout various areas in the showroom.

A recessed profile with high-output linear LED 3000K was used to create a direct beam gently lighting up the wooden walls.
