Commercial LED lighting

Commercial LED lighting sets how a space performs and how it feels, from the first impression at the entrance to the way people work, shop or relax inside it. Get it right and the building does its job quietly. Get it wrong and the problems show up as glare, uneven light, colour shifts and running costs higher than they should be.

Commercial lighting systems

From our experience here at Detail Lighting, most commercial schemes disappoint for the same reason. The lighting is treated as a product order at the end of the programme rather than a design decision made early. By that point the ceiling is set, the budget is fixed and the options are limited.

Detail Lighting works differently. Design, specification, project management and supply sit under one roof at our Milton Keynes facility, with a London showroom, and the same people stay on a project from concept to commissioning.

Marking 25 years in 2026, we specify commercial LED lighting across offices, retail, hospitality, showrooms and mixed-use developments. Our full commercial lighting range is built for these environments.

What commercial LED lighting has to deliver

Commercial spaces ask more of lighting than a single bright layer. They need an ambient level people can work and move in safely, task light where detail matters, and accent light that gives a space depth and draws the eye to what matters.

Energy performance is now a compliance issue, not a preference. Part L of the Building Regulations sets efficacy expectations for new and refurbished commercial lighting, measured in luminaire lumens per circuit watt. LG7 and BS EN 12464-1 set out the illuminance and glare criteria for offices and workplaces, including the UGR limits that keep screens usable.

Good commercial LED lighting meets these numbers without making the space feel like a car park. That balance between measured performance and how a room actually reads is the design problem worth solving.

Colour temperature, colour rendering and glare

Three specifications decide how a commercial interior looks under LED. Colour temperature sets the mood. 3000K gives a warmer tone suited to hospitality and retail, while 4000K reads cooler and cleaner for offices and clinical settings.

Colour rendering decides whether materials, food and skin tones look right. A CRI of 90 or above holds those tones accurately, which matters in retail and hospitality where product and interiors have to look their best. Lower CRI saves money and shows it on the surfaces.

Glare is where many schemes fail on site. A fitting with a UGR above 19 causes visible discomfort in an office and tires people across a working day. Recessed fittings with deep anti-glare optics keep the light on the task and the source out of direct view.

Where to begin with commercial architectural lighting?

Downlighting for commercial interiors

Downlighting is the backbone of most commercial schemes. The Archinto Adjustable is a round recessed downlight with 25 degrees of tilt and 350 degrees of rotation, so a single fitting type can provide general light and angled accent across a floorplate. It runs a 10W LED at CRI90, carries an IP54 rating and is fire-rated to EN1363-1:2020, which keeps specification simple where fire performance is required.

Where the ceiling cannot be cut, the SD041 surface downlight mounts directly to the soffit. It delivers 15W through a 60 degree optic in 3000K or 4000K, with Casambi, DALI, 0-10V or Triac dimming, so it suits the exposed concrete and services-led ceilings common in offices and retail fit-outs.

Track and adjustable lighting for changing layouts

Retail, galleries and showrooms rearrange their displays, and the lighting has to follow. Track keeps that flexibility built in. The ALT45 48v track spotlight is a compact 11W fitting available in 14, 20, 32 and 56 degree beams, so the same track can carry tight accents and wider washes and be re-aimed when the layout moves.

For a more architectural line, the Cortes 48v deep surface and suspended track runs as a slim surface or suspended system in 1m and 2m lengths. It carries spots and linear elements on one low-voltage track, which suits open retail and hospitality where the track itself should stay discreet.

Linear LED for continuous lines of light

Linear LED shapes architecture. It picks out coves, reveals, joinery and thresholds with an unbroken line that downlights cannot produce. The Volans Premium COB IP20 is an 8mm flexible strip running 480 LEDs per metre with a dot-free COB output, so the line reads as continuous light rather than a row of points.

It comes in 5, 10 and 15W per metre, from 590 to 1600 lumens per metre, with CRI90 and cutting centres at 50mm for accurate lengths on site. Dimming through DALI, 0-10V or Casambi lets a cove sit quietly in the background or lift to become a feature.

Controls and energy compliance

Controls turn a set of fittings into a scheme that meets Part L and works day to day. DALI gives addressable control of individual fittings for larger commercial floors. Casambi adds wireless Bluetooth control and scene setting without the cabling, which suits refurbishments and hospitality. 0-10V remains a straightforward choice for simpler zoned spaces.

Specifying dimming and zoning early keeps the installed load within the Part L allowance and gives the client scenes for trading hours, cleaning and out of hours. Left to the end, controls become the part of the job that overruns.

Specified and delivered by one team

The product is only half of a commercial LED lighting scheme. The other half is the design that places it, the specification that holds it together and the coordination that gets it installed the way it was drawn.

Detail Lighting keeps all of that under one roof, with a single point of responsibility from concept to commissioning. To discuss a commercial lighting scheme, talk to our team on 01908 613 256 or email sales@detaillighting.co.uk.
