The importance of sustainable lighting continues to influence the design of both residential and commercial buildings.
Detail Lighting has advocated sustainable lighting innovation and design for many years.
In the UK, buildings account for around 20% of total carbon emissions, with 15% of electrical use being attributed to lighting. Here lies the importance of sustainable lighting in protecting the environment, and our inspiration for continuously innovating to produce the most sustainable, bespoke lighting products.
The importance of sustainable lighting is now central to the work of interior designers, architects and property developers, who we work with on a wide range of projects.
Key principles for sustainable lighting design include:
Sustainable lighting makes the best use of natural light. A sustainable lighting designer will be fully aware of how and when natural light enters a room before creating an artificial lighting scheme.
Smart tools such as dimmers, timers, occupancy sensors and lighting temperature controls allow for lighting to be used as and when it is needed, rather than being constantly switched on. This gives users complete control over their carbon footprint.
Layered lighting schemes of ambient, accent and task lighting allow for greater versatility and adaptability in lighting to ensure only necessary lighting is provided at any time.
Bespoke lighting schemes that are designed for a particular building or room will allow for maximum sustainability.
At Detail Lighting we advocate our ‘repair why replace’ sustainable lighting policy.
We encourage the repair of existing lighting products over the manufacture of new, wherever possible. This avoids generating carbon emissions that would be produced during the manufacture process, and reduces waste.
All of our products are manufactured to be serviced, upgraded, reused and refurbished. Each product is also supplied with repair and recycling instructions.
By repairing key components or upgrading to the latest specifications, embodied carbon is reduced and we are able to support our lighting products for life. This, we believe, is true sustainable lighting.
Some of Detail Lighting’s sustainable lighting projects can be viewed on our website at www.detaillighting.co.uk/projects. Here, you will find a range of residential and commercial lighting design projects that are all based on sustainability.
