Lighting design for retail spaces

Lighting design for retail spaces is becoming an increasingly specialised area, as competition in retail intensifies.

The shopping experience is just as important to many customers as the merchandise or products they can purchase. Creating a first impression that entices a customer through the door can have a lasting impact on profitability due to the immeasurable value of ongoing customer loyalty. Lighting design is key to creating that all-important first impression.

Lighting helps a retail space to create a sense of brand identity and an ambiance that complements the products being sold. The lighting scheme in a supermarket will be completely different to that of a boutique clothes shop.

Customers know what they want from a retail store experience, and retail staff need the most suitable lighting fixtures to promote products in a way that entices those customers to buy them. Expertly crafted lighting design seamlessly merges the two necessities to create the ideal retail space for all.

Our approach to retail lighting design

Detail Lighting has been designing and planning retail lighting schemes since we were founded in 2000. Design professionals who specify lighting fixtures, such as interior designers, architects and property developers, rely on our expertise in lighting design to deliver the right ambiance, and the most effective merchandising of products, for their retail clients.

Our approach to retail lighting design is very much bespoke and hands-on. We visit the site to talk through the brief and understand the designer’s vision for delivering their client’s expectations. In those conversations we discuss ambient, task and accent lighting and how they can be layered to create the most effective lighting scheme.

We use the information gleaned in our discussions to create our lighting designs for the retail space. When presenting those designs to the client, we introduce the lighting fixtures we have included, their proposed location, and how the layering will work. We also decide on dimming zones if appropriate and where smart technology will benefit managers, staff and customers.

Architectural lighting fixtures for retail spaces

Typical architectural lighting fixtures for retail spaces include recessed lighting fixtures, surface-mounted fixtures, linear LED lighting and track lighting.

Recessed and surface-mounted lighting fixtures are used as directional lighting to highlight and promote specific merchandise.

Track lighting covers a broader space so is ideal in areas where products are regularly swapped in and out. Linear LED lighting can be used to wash walls to create the right ambiance, and in shelving to draw the eye.

For more opulent retail stores, dimmable pendants and lamps are often used to create a more luxurious experience.

Retail lighting case study

For clothing brand, Daily Paper, we were asked to draw attention to the merchandise through our lighting design. The brand’s flagship London store has an all-white interior, so it was essential that we chose the correct light levels and glare control to achieve the right effect.

We installed a 240v track with Danny Max 85 4000K which provided a variety of beam angles for high lighting. For the shelves, recesses and the contemporary staircase handrail we chose Linear Volans LED profiles.
