What biophilic principles ask of office lighting
Biophilic design reconnects people with the natural patterns they respond to instinctively. Light carries most of that work. In practice it means two things for an office. The first is protecting and prioritising access to daylight. The second is recreating the qualities of natural light where daylight cannot reach, through variation, warmth, direction and accurate colour.
None of this replaces the baseline requirements. BS EN 12464-1 sets out illuminance levels and glare limits for workplaces, and the WELL Building Standard addresses circadian lighting through measures such as equivalent melanopic lux. Biophilic lighting should be designed to work within these standards, not around them. The aim is a scheme that meets task requirements and supports occupant wellbeing at the same time.
Prioritise and protect daylight
Daylight is the strongest biophilic asset in any office, so the electric lighting scheme should complement it rather than compete with it. Position desks and shared spaces to make use of available daylight, and keep glare under control with appropriate shading. Daylight-linked controls then dim luminaires near windows as natural light rises, which saves energy and keeps the transition between daylight and electric light comfortable through the day.
Layer light to reflect natural variation
Natural environments are never uniformly lit. Recreating that variation indoors means moving away from a flat grid of identical downlights and building the scheme in layers. Ambient light sets the overall level, task light supports focused work, and accent light adds depth and interest. The contrast between these layers is what makes a space feel calm and three-dimensional rather than clinical.
Suspended and surface track is a practical way to deliver an ambient layer with character. The Cortes 48v deep surface and suspended track can be run as continuous lines or pendant arrangements over open-plan areas and breakout spaces, carrying spotlights and linear modules on a single low-voltage system. That flexibility lets the layout follow the architecture and the planting rather than a fixed ceiling grid.
Support circadian rhythm with tunable white and control
A defining feature of natural light is that it changes through the day, from warmer tones at the start and end to cooler, brighter light around midday. Tunable white lighting recreates that shift indoors and is one of the most direct ways to bring circadian support into an office.
The Volans Premium COB IP20 linear LED includes a tunable white option spanning roughly 1800K to 5000K, with a dot-free output and CRI90 colour rendering. Used in coves, perimeter details and joinery, it provides a soft indirect layer that can warm or cool over the working day.
Pairing it with a Casambi or DALI control system allows scenes to be programmed and adjusted without rewiring, so the building operator can fine-tune timings to suit how the space is actually used.
Render natural materials and planting accurately
Biophilic interiors rely on timber, stone, natural textiles and living planting. Light with poor colour rendering flattens these materials and makes greenery look dull, which undermines the whole intent. Specifying luminaires with a colour rendering index of 90 or above keeps natural finishes looking true and planting looking healthy.
Accent lighting brings planting and feature walls forward. The ALT45 48v track spotlight offers beam angles from 14 to 56 degrees and accepts honeycomb and diffuser accessories, so light can be focused onto a green wall or planter and kept off occupants’ eye lines.
Where a recessed approach suits the ceiling, the Archinto adjustable downlight provides 25 degrees of tilt and 350 degrees of rotation with a shallow anti-glare aperture and CRI90 output, which makes it well suited to washing natural material finishes and directing light onto biophilic features.
Control glare and protect visual comfort
Visual comfort is a biophilic principle in its own right, because a space cannot feel restful if occupants are squinting at bright sources or working under harsh reflections on screens. Recessed and anti-glare optics, considered beam control and careful aiming all reduce discomfort glare and keep the unified glare rating within the limits set by BS EN 12464-1.
For the task layer, a discreet surface downlight such as the SD041 15w delivers controlled light to desks and meeting areas with a choice of dimming protocols and 3000K or 4000K colour temperatures.
Keeping task light separate from ambient and accent layers means each can be set to the right level, rather than relying on one over-lit grid to do everything.
Keep the scheme efficient and compliant
Biophilic ambition has to sit within energy and compliance requirements. Part L of the Building Regulations sets efficiency expectations for new and refurbished commercial lighting, so luminaire efficacy, controls and dimming all matter to the specification.
Well-designed controls reduce energy use while delivering the variation and circadian shift the scheme depends on, which means wellbeing and efficiency pull in the same direction rather than against each other.
