A Scandinavia inspired residential property in Surrey with careful curated lighting

Project Brief
Detail Lighting was asked to create a unique, contemporary lighting scheme for a technology-packed, large family home in Surrey.
We collaborated with AV and technology experts, Indigo Zest, and architects Urban Matrix to produce a lighting scheme that would complement the high-end, Scandinavian style interior. We managed the full lighting technical design package, from concept to completion.
The interior design of the aspirational residential property was a mix of warm neutral tones with strong black contrasting accents, natural wood and simplistic furnishings, typical of a Scandinavian home. Our brief was to reflect this style of living in an unobtrusive lighting scheme that accentuates architectural features and delivers an ambiance of warmth and relaxation.
Development
In the kitchen we installed Quadro deep trimless downlights for ambient and task lighting. The Quadro is set back to provide a contemporary look. It offers an angle tilt of between 15 and 40 degrees which can be used to direct the beam to task areas such as kitchen worktops. These downlights worked well with the hanging pendants over the kitchen island and seating area.
For the pool, we installed tunable white LEDs behind a stretch ceiling, which we engineered and managed. To emulate natural light, we installed the same daylight effect on the basement level, with a stretched ceiling and tunable LEDs in many rooms. Tunable LEDs were also installed in bathrooms where natural light wasn’t available.
The hugely popular Danny surface mounted, dimmable spotlight, which is adjustable to a 90 degree tilt and has a 320 degree rotation, was installed in several rooms. This complemented soft wash lighting on the ceiling from the recessed Pintor wall-washer which provides even wall washing through its dedicated wall-wash optic, and has a 355 degree rotation.
In various rooms we used Voleos round, trimless downlights that are dimmable and offer the highest colour rendering to accurately reproduce colours or show the natural colour of objects and features.
For uplighting and step washing, the Astra Adjust in-ground, directional uplighter created discreet, medium and narrow beams.
In various joinery pieces and structures we fitted Volans Premium products. At Detail Lighting, we engineer lighting concepts using the Volans Premium Shelf System to illuminate almost any shelved furnishing or structure. For this project it was used to bring a chic, connoisseur quality to the shelving in the stunning wine cellar. The Volans Premium warm dimming linear LED strip and Volans Premium COB are ideal for long runs to highlight large joinery installations. They were used to provide a warm border glow around floor to ceiling cupboards in the dining room.
For the exterior of the property, various types of exterior lighting products contributed to making the outside spaces a seamless extension of the indoor areas. The MIRA 2 contemporary outdoor ground spot is a glare free, high power spotlight that we used to uplight external pillars.
Outcome
There were sloped ceilings in the property for which we developed interesting lighting design techniques to overcome the typical problems they create. Sloped ceilings can cause light to be distributed unevenly across a space, and hotspots or shadowed areas where the ceiling sides meet.
In the bedrooms, we merged Danny Air surface lights with the LED linear lighting at the top of the ceiling where they blend together. Placement of the light fixtures is important on sloped ceilings to balance the light distribution, as is making the right beam angle selection to ensure even coverage. Wider beam angles can help spread light more uniformly.
Using our expertise and innovative approach to lighting design, we produced a range of lighting schemes, each appropriate to the layout and interior design of the room, and ensured a consistent quality and tone throughout the property.
Through integrated smart technology, we were able to provide the homeowner with complete control over their lighting, including layering, dimming and colour.
